| Ptarmigan | 1911 | Taylor, Rufus | 36 | Rufus Taylor | The new boat P. now at the Marine wharf being engined is the first power boat ever constructed throughout of the famous Porcher Is. yellow cedar which has been sent as far as the coast of Main to be used in yacht building. Mr. Rufus Taylor who practically built her himself designed her on the model of the Gulf of Mexico sailing boats, Mr. Taylor being a native of Florida. Her length is overall 36, beam 9 6 with 56 headroom in her house forward. Built to face hard weather, the P. is seaworthy in appearance. Her polished cedar deck is strong, and battened down with tight hatches she will ride heavy seas. Her steering gear and engine levers are handled amidships and she carries mast and sails. An 8 hp Standard engine will give her a good working speed and she will be used in fishing and hunting trips. Her value is $1600. Taylor was for several years chief engineer to the BC Packers Assoc. on the Skeena River. He now lives on Porcher and will take a pre-emption there shortly. (DN Oct. 11, 1911) |
